How to select your tubular motor?

1. Determine the Application Type

  • Roller Shutters: Heavy-duty motors are needed for security shutters.
  • Roller Blinds / Curtains: Lighter motors suffice for residential or decorative uses.
  • Awnings or Projection Screens: Consider torque, speed, and control options.

2. Calculate the Required Torque

Torque is the rotational force the motor can provide, usually measured in Nm (Newton-meters). To calculate:

  1. Measure the weight of the roller shutter.
  2. Determine the tube diameter and material.
  3. Use torque charts provided by the manufacturer or calculate torque:

Required Torque (Nm)≈{Roller shutter Weight (kg) × Roller Radius (m) × 9.81}÷ Efficiency Factor

  • Efficiency factor: Usually 0.8–1.2 depending on type of shutter and friction.

3. Choose the Motor Diameter

  • Standard diameters: 35mm, 45mm, 59mm, 92mm, etc.
  • Ensure the motor fits the roller tube: the motor’s diameter must match the inner diameter of the tube.

4. Select Voltage and Speed

  • Voltage:  230V AC for mains; 12V, 24V DC for battery-operated motors.110Vac optional
  • Speed: Low RPM (revolutions per minute) for heavy shutters; high RPM for lightweight blinds.
  • Common speeds: 6–20 RPM, adjustable depending on the application.

5. Decide on Control Type

  • Manual Switch: Simple up/down control.
  • Remote Control / RF: Wireless control for convenience.
  • Smart Home Integration: Compatible with home automation systems like Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Wi-Fi.

6. Consider Additional Features

  • End Limits / Mechanical or Electronic: Prevent over-rolling.
  • Overload Protection: Protects motor from damage due to heavy loads.
  • Quiet Operation: Important for residential settings.
  • Battery Backup: For power outages.

7. Check Installation and Maintenance Requirements

  • Ensure space allows for motor and tube installation.
  • Look for motors with easy maintenance or service options.
